Common Tree Removal Scenarios
Dead Tree Removal
A dead tree is one that has lost its living tissue and structural strength, and on a Sherwood property it’s a fall risk as it decays and spreads pests.
A dead tree near a home is a safety concern best addressed before severe weather.
Single-family removals generally don’t need a permit, though the city limits removals to five trees per calendar year, something Monkeyman’s tracks with you.
An overgrown tree is a healthy tree that has outgrown its space, threatening structures on Sherwood’s residential lots.
The owner is responsible for safe removal when a tree endangers property.
Monkeyman’s handles overgrown removals, advises on pruning, and keeps you mindful of the annual five-tree limit.
A diseased tree carries an infection that weakens it from within. Humidity near the Tualatin River NWR fosters root rot, heart rot, and Verticillium wilt.
These infections are hard to detect early and can spread.
Monkeyman’s ISA Certified Arborists diagnose, contain, and remove trees beyond saving.
A storm-damaged tree has been cracked, split, or uprooted by wind, ice, or debris. Storm damage is common in Sherwood.
More than 50% crown loss usually means removal, though resilient trees often survive.
Monkeyman’s evaluates survivability before recommending removal.
Emergency tree removal is the 24/7 response needed when a tree has fallen, or threatens to, onto a home, vehicle, or power line.
For hazardous removals, Monkeyman’s uses crane support through Smith Crane.
When a tree falls on your Sherwood property, we respond day or night.
View clearing is the selective removal or pruning of trees that block a scenic sightline. Some Sherwood properties have views worth opening through selective clearing.
The work preserves the trees you want to keep.
Monkeyman’s opens the sightline while protecting your remaining trees.
Lot clearing is the systematic removal of trees and brush to prepare a site for building.
Sectional removal and heavy equipment are used as needed.

FAQ
Sherwood regulates tree removal, with additional protection for significant trees and for trees inside natural resource and habitat areas — and the Tonquin and wetland-adjacent parts of the city carry meaningful restrictions. We confirm what applies to your address before quoting.
Yes, and carefully. Oregon white oak is a slow-growing, ecologically valuable species that’s been lost across much of the valley, and it responds badly to aggressive pruning. We prune conservatively, treat health problems before considering removal, and will tell you plainly when an oak is worth keeping.
Old Town, Woodhaven, Brookman, Ladd Hill, the Sherwood West neighborhoods, and the acreage properties toward Chehalem Ridge and the Tonquin area.
Yes. Larger Sherwood and Ladd Hill parcels regularly need pasture reclamation, blackberry and scotch broom clearing, fence-line recovery, driveway clearance, and fuel reduction. We bring ground crews, chippers, and heavier clearing equipment for that scale of work.
Often, yes. Neglected orchard trees here can frequently be brought back over two to three seasons of staged renovation pruning — trying to fix it in one winter shocks the tree and triggers weak regrowth. Our arborist will assess whether the structure justifies the effort or whether replanting is the better investment.
