2. Always Leave a Gap Around the Trunk
This is the tip that separates good mulching from damaging mulching. The base of the trunk and root flare — the area where the trunk widens and transitions into roots at ground level — must remain completely exposed to air. Pull mulch back 3 to 6 inches from the bark in all directions so the root flare is fully visible.
Tree bark is a protective barrier designed to breathe. When it sits against continuously moist mulch, the bark softens, loses its structural integrity, and becomes an entry point for fungal pathogens and wood-boring insects. The damage is slow and cumulative, which is why many homeowners don’t connect the mulch piled at the base with the declining tree they’re dealing with three to five years later.

3. Never Build a Mulch Volcano
Volcano mulching — piling mulch into a cone or mound against the trunk — is the most common mulching mistake in residential landscaping and one of the most preventable causes of tree decline. 4. Go Wide — The Bigger the Ring, the Better
There is no such thing as too wide a mulch ring, as long as the trunk gap is maintained. The typical 2 to 3-foot ring seen in most residential landscapes is a minimum, not an ideal. Extending the mulched area to 6, 8, or even 10 feet of diameter increases the volume of loose, biologically active soil available to the tree’s root system dramatically.
For young trees, the mulch ring should ideally extend to the drip line — the imaginary circle on the ground directly below the outer edge of the canopy. For mature trees in tighter spaces, 4 to 6 feet of diameter delivers a significant benefit over a narrow ring.
On properties with multiple trees standing close together, creating one continuous mulched bed rather than individual circles is even more effective. It mimics the natural woodland floor conditions trees evolved in, reduces mowing and trimming maintenance, and looks cleaner than scattered individual rings. Maintain a clear gap around each individual trunk within the shared bed.
5. Choose Organic, Medium-Textured Mulch
Not all mulch is equally beneficial. Organic mulches — materials that decompose over time — are the correct choice for trees because the decomposition process itself is what feeds the soil. Inorganic mulches like rubber or gravel do not improve soil biology, can trap heat against the root zone in summer, and offer none of the long-term nutritional benefit that organic materials provide.
For Portland-area trees, coarse or medium-textured wood chips and shredded bark are the most practical options. Avoid fine-textured mulches, which tend to compress into a dense, water-repelling mat that sheds rainfall instead of letting it infiltrate to the roots. Cedar mulch lasts longer than most hardwoods and has mild natural insect-repellent properties, though it comes at a higher price point.

6. Time Your Mulching for Spring or Fall
Spring and fall are the most effective windows for mulching in the Portland area, and each serves a different purpose.
Spring mulching — applied in April or May before soil temperatures climb — locks in moisture from winter rains and insulates roots against the heat and drought stress that builds through July and August. Portland’s dry summers are when established trees face the most water stress, and a fresh spring mulch ring can meaningfully reduce supplemental watering needs.

7. Refresh Mulch Annually — But Don’t Just Pile More On
Organic mulch breaks down over time. That’s the point — decomposition is what feeds the soil. But it also means the functional depth decreases each year and needs to be replenished to maintain the 2 to 4-inch range.
The mistake here is treating a mulch refresh like a top-up. Adding new material on top of existing mulch without checking what’s underneath is how mulch rings gradually creep above 4 inches, start burying the root flare, and turn into the volcano problem covered in Tip 3.
The right approach is to pull existing mulch back from the trunk first, check the total depth and condition of what’s already there, remove any matted or compacted layers, and then add only enough fresh material to bring the ring back to the target depth. Once a year — ideally timed to spring or fall — is sufficient for most Portland trees.
8. Skip the Landscape Fabric
Landscape fabric beneath mulch is one of the most persistent bad ideas in residential landscaping. The premise sounds logical: fabric blocks weeds while letting water through. In practice, it does the opposite of what trees need.
Fabric prevents the mulch from decomposing into the soil — which eliminates the entire reason organic mulch is beneficial. It restricts water infiltration as it ages and collects fine sediment. It blocks beneficial soil organisms from reaching the mulch layer. And within two to three seasons, weed seeds germinate in the mulch on top of the fabric anyway, defeating the original purpose while leaving a semi-permanent barrier in the root zone.
For weed control in mulched tree beds, depth alone is the answer. Three inches of coarse wood chips suppresses the vast majority of annual weeds without any fabric. Perennial weeds that push through can be pulled individually — a far better outcome than buried fabric degrading in the root zone for years.
9. Mulch New Trees From Day One
Newly planted trees benefit from mulching more than established trees at any other stage. A properly sized mulch ring around a young tree conserves moisture in the root ball during the critical first growing season, moderates soil temperatures while roots are still shallow, and keeps mowing and trimming equipment away from the vulnerable young trunk.
Young trees should have a mulch ring extending at least 3 feet from the trunk in all directions — wider if space allows. The same 2 to 4-inch depth applies, and the same rule about keeping mulch clear of the trunk is just as important on a new planting as on a mature tree.
If you’re planting a new tree in a spot where one was previously removed, stump grinding the old stump first ensures the new root system won’t compete with decaying roots below.
